Rwenzori Mountains National Park Trekking

Rwenzori Mountains National Park facts: This Ugandan national park located in the Rwenzori Mountains. The park is owned by the Ugandan government's Uganda Wildlife Authority. Officially protected it is unfortunate that extraction practices are still permitted causing damage to the woody vegetation. The Park was established in 1991 and designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1994 because of its outstanding natural beauty. Since then the park has become famous for its Rwenzori Mountains National Park Trekking and accommodation.

The 120 km long and 48 km wide Rwenzori Mountains National Park  is located in south-western Uganda in the western African rift valley. Straddled along the border with the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) the Rwenzori Mountains are protected in Uganda's Rwenzori Mountains National Park and it bordering twin Virunga National Park, also a UNESCO World Heritage Site belonging to the DRC.  The park is 99.600 ha in size, of which 2/3 exceeds an altitude of 2,500 m.   The park includes Africa's third highest peak, many waterfalls, several lakes and some of the few African glaciers and is one of Africa's most beautiful mountain areas.

The park includes most of the centre and eastern half of the Rwenzori Mountains, just north of the equator. Higher than the Alps, several of its peaks are ice-capped. One of Mount Stanley's 2 peaks,  Margherita Peak, is Africa's third highest peak with a height of 5,109 metres. Africa's fourth and fifth highest peaks, Mount Speke and Mount Baker, are also included in the park.

The park has many species endemic to the Albertine Rift Valley and to the Rwenzori Mountains themselves. Given the humid conditions of the cloud forests, It has a high diversity of plant  and tree species. There are five distinct vegetation zones in the park, which changes with the elevation creating fascinating landscapes.

Being a high elevation park, the fauna is not as rich as that of the lowland parks, but many species are endemic to these high altitudes. There have been 89 species of birds recorded and 15 species of butterflies. At the lowest elevations, one can find forest elephants, chimpanzee, hyrax, black-and-white colobus, L'Hoest's monkeys, duiker, and Rwenzori turaco.
