LAKE FÚQUENE

Lake Fúquene

There are many small mountain lakes in northern Andes at the higher elevations, which because of their sizes and elevations mostly are rather poor in biodiversity. However, there are only a few lakes at mid-elevation ranges (1500 to 2500 masl), the few true lakes occur only in a handful basins and most have been reduced in size. Lake Fúquene is one of the few remaining altiplano lakes and quite rich and unique flora and fauna. At an elevation of about 2540 masl and a size of about 3000 ha, it currently the second largest Andean Lake.

However, Lake Fúquene used to be 4 times bigger in the first half of last century and probably even bigger before the arrival of the Spanish. While information varies among different authors, the lake level was considerably higher in the past, but also subject to large fluctuations. Many sources mention a difference of 10 meters. While the reduction of size is regrettable, the current lake still is a fabulous place to visit, and the local government is carrying out a management scheme to improve both the size of the lake and stabilize the water table. It was considered sacred by the Muisca, the pre-colonial inhabitants of the region. A short list of about 50 aquatic birds are known to the area, but no serious list is has been published, and no doubt many more bird species live in and around the lake.

Why consider booking our Colombia National Parks Tour? Because for the same price, our tour gets you to ALL places for which Colombia is famous, and on top of that, you get to see 7 National Parks/Reserves accompanied by a naturalist guide. There is nothing similar on the market. As Colombia can be combined with other countries, we organize tours in modules: Bogota and surrounding Andes, Caribbean Coast and the Amazon of Ecuador; the latter for the Colombian Amazon still not being recommended for foreign visitors. Colombia is a very large country, so you need to fly. To do so at hardly any additional costs, you need to book both Bogota and Cartagena - and Quito if you want to include the Amazon module - in your international ticket.

Destinations Overview:  Bogota old town, Cartagena, Villa de Leyva Zipaguira Salt Mine Church, Chingaza Reserve, Iguaque National Park, Flamencos Reserve, Cienega Mangroves Reserve, Lake Fuquene, Tayrona National Park, Manaure Salt Flats.

While, the unique aquatic systems have been under severe human pressure a new management scheme of the Government of Colombia with financial aid from the Government of Finland has started to restore the ecological conditions of the lake. Due to eutrofication, the flora of the lake caused large portions to be covered by invasive vegetation and peat accumulation.

This vegetation and peat formation is currently being dredged and converted into compost, thus opening up the surface water while providing high quality compost for agricultural purposes and at the same time securing clean drinking and irrigation water. The Autonomous Environmental Corporation of Cundinamarca – CAR – is responsible for management of Lake Fúquene.

There are not many opportunities to actually get onto the lake and go birdwatching, but we have an arrangement with a local boat owner. In fact, his boat is an antique boat that he carefully keeps up while organizing visits to the only local island and interesting birding trips.
