TITICACA NATIONAL RESERVATION: Extensive marshes full of aquatic birds, endemic fish and amphibians. Also see Uros, Taquile and Amantani Islands & Sillustani ruins.

Titicaca National Reservation

Decreed in 1978,  the reserve protects some 37,000 ha of marshes along the  Eastern and Northern shores of the lake in the provinces Puno, Huancané and Ramis. The reserve protects over 60 species of aquatic birds, four families of fish and 18 species of amphibians including the enormous Titicaca Water Frog, the flightless endemic Titicaca Grebe and a variety of fish species of the genus Orestias and catfish of the genera Astroblepus and Trichomycterus (the last genus not in the lake itself, but in associated ecosystems). About 90% of the fish species in the basin are endemic.

The Totora reed marshes are littered with small lakes, connected by narrow shallow canals, only accessible by the traditional reed boats and rowboats. As only the latter can be motorized, on our birding excursions, we take you in the latter, so that you get to see a nice portion of wetland within a reasonable amount of time.

Rainfall on the altiplano also varies with its west (dryer) - east (wetter) position, due to the effects of the Humboldt current. The climate of Titicaca is chilly, often with temperatures below 0 °C at night while rarely reaching comfortable temperatures in daytime. One should always have a sweater and a jacket at hand, as the temperatures my drop in minutes when a cloud moves in.

Titicaca National Reservation: Uros village at floating island on Lake Titicaca.

Titicaca National Reservation: Uros community on floating island.

While our excursions take you through the Titicaca National Reserve, you would of course always visit the Uros community. In fact, in stead of taking the regular tourist boat, an Uros Indian will meet you in the harbor of Puno in a motorized rowboat to take you into the marshes of the Titicaca National Reservation and also to his village. So in stead of being taken on a tourist boat, you will be hosted exclusively by a member of the Uros community, evidently while being accompanied by a naturalist guide.
